Abstract
Artists and arts organizations need funding from external sources to complete projects and to pay for operational expenses. The issue this study addresses is the use of crowd funding in the arts. The objective of this study is to determine what role crowd funding plays in arts funding in the United States. Interviews with three arts crowd funders were conducted to gather data. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed. Three themes arose from the data. The themes are success factors to arts crowd funding, challenges to using crowd funding in the arts, and the use of multiple funding methods. These themes will be useful in understanding the role that crowd funding plays in the funding portfolio of artists and arts organizations. This study contributes to the general body of arts funding knowledge by studying crowd funding as an innovative addition to the traditional sources available to fund arts projects.
