Music therapy Transgender people Sexual minorities--Health and hygiene
Transgender healthcare has historically been an under-researched topic, with many medical professionals lacking awareness of common needs of this population. This lack of understanding may result in transgender patients avoiding healthcare entirely or suffering bad experiences. In addition to a shift in gender identity, transgender patients who are hospitalized are experiencing a shift in identity from well to ill which may detrimentally affect self-esteem, emotional processing, and agency. Though there is little existing research on the use of music therapy with transgender patients, the author draws connections between existing research on transgender healthcare and future implications for music therapy practice. The author includes considerations for practice for music therapists and suggested interventions for best supporting the identity of transgender patients in a healthcare setting, as well as recommendations for future research.
