Abstract

Digital media GRUX Settings Universal design User experience UX Video games digital media
This research was conducted to study the effects of design heuristics on the user experience of settings menus in video games. The usage of best practices and design principles in the field of GRUX (Games Research and User Experience) are less established and inconsistently used than in other areas of digital media. By producing qualitative and quantitative data from this study, we were able to analyze the effects of an established set of heuristics, the 7 Principles of Universal Design, on the user experience of navigating and understanding these menus in a video game interface. Through A/B testing, we compared participants' reactions to a commercial video game and our developed prototype. Our final analysis determined that there is a positive correlation between the application of the universal design principles and an improved user experience with settings menus. We believe this success of using an established set of heuristics suggests further research into industry-standard best practices for GRUX.
