The Value and Lasting Impact of a College Theatre Program: A Case Study

Abstract
This study examines the value and impact that a small college theatre program has on the personal and professional lives of current students and alumni after graduation. Throughout this case study, a combination of a survey with current students and interviews with faculty, alumni, and current students were conducted. The aim was to discover whether or not there was an importance and value of theatre and performing arts education and how it can impact the lives of current students and alumni. Why do students choose to dedicate their time to the theatre when it is not their future career path? What skills do they gain from the experience of working with a small theatre program that they will transfer to their professional lives? What skills do they learn that are beneficial to post graduate life? I found that the majority of the current students and alumni had positive and valuable experiences involved in the theatre program. Many students experienced social and psychological benefits like increased self-esteem, enhanced public speaking skills, lasting relationships, and an increased sense of belonging. Throughout this study, I will breakdown and show the importance of theatre involvement and education as well as its long-term effects on current students and alumni in their professional and personal lives.
