Communication Authenticity Diversity Representation Stereotypes Culture Evolution
This thesis explores the representation of South Asians in Hollywood, analyzing the historical stereotypes, current trends, and future directions for more authentic portrayals. The research employs a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative interviews with industry experts and quantitative survey data to offer a comprehensive overview of how South Asian characters and stories have been depicted over the years and how they are evolving. Historical analysis reveals that South Asians have traditionally been confined to stereotypical roles, which have perpetuated simplistic and often negative perceptions. However, recent developments indicate a shift towards more nuanced and complex representations, reflecting broader cultural and societal changes. The findings suggest that while there has been progress in diversifying portrayals and increasing the visibility of South Asian cultures in Hollywood, significant gaps remain. Many portrayals continue to rely on outdated clichés, and there is a critical need for greater inclusion of South Asians in decision-making and creative roles to ensure authenticity. The research highlights the importance of such inclusivity for enhancing the depth and accuracy of South Asian narratives in media. This thesis provides valuable insights for media industry leaders and content creators, underlining the importance of authentic representation not only for cultural accuracy but also for its potential to influence broader societal attitudes and inclusivity. The study advocates for continued efforts to break away from inaccurate portrayals and encourages a more holistic approach to representing the beautiful diversity of South Asian communities. By addressing these challenges, Hollywood can better serve a global audience and contribute to a more inclusive media landscape.
