Anorexia nervosa Body image Mother-Child Relations Visual Perception
The purpose of this study is to understand how individuals with anorexia nervosa experience depicting mother-childrelationships in their artwork. This study focuses on howthe individual diagnosed with anorexia experiences 1)creating an "ideal" mother-child drawing, 2) creating an"ordinary" mother-child drawing, 3) looking at thedrawings, and 4) discussing the drawings. Common themesfound through phenomenological analysis were the presenceand absence of communication in mother-child relationships, support and love in the relationship, avoidance of personalmother-child relationships while indirectly revealingpersonal information, attachment between mother and child, and the role of the mother as disciplinarian or friend. Theart process appeared to aid the participants in expressingtheir feelings about mother-child relationships in ametaphorical, nonverbal way.
