Abstract

City planning Economic Development Economics Employees Urban Economics
The nature of labor within the United States has been distinctly altered over the past 50 years due to deindustrialization, global market movements, and technological innovation. The prioritization of neoliberal economic theory within urban economic development initiatives places American cities at an inherent disadvantage in creating equitable social conditions for their citizens. The researcher offers a comparative economic analysis of Memphis, TN; Denver, CO; and Philadelphia, PA. Qualitative interviews are conducted in order to examine and predict future employment industry sectors in each referenced City. The review ends with a discussion of progressive policy implementation, and how neoliberal urbanism impacts American competitiveness globally.
