Abstract
Virtual reality has had a series of innovations within the tech industry that have allowed further immersion into research and more recently the consumer market. With the growing availability of virtual reality and the omnipresence of technology within modern life, this capstone investigates the current literature surrounding virtual reality within the field of mental health, and more specifically within the creative arts therapies. The literature review specifically targets the use of head mounted display based virtual reality in interventions and development of theories. Knowledge and context that was acquired was then applied towards a virtual reality collaboration project with music and art therapy students called VROOM (Virtual Reality Odyssey of the Mind). This exploration project included a group discussion that highlighted some of the virtual reality aspects that could be further explored for the field of art therapy. This capstone concludes with personal reflections, considerations, and suggestions surrounding the need for digital media education within art therapy master's level graduate programs.
