Abstract
2020 has seen a significant increase in news coverage of questionable and often violent law enforcement interactions with African Americans and subsequent protests by the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. What is not known are the true motivations of news outlets for providing breaking news coverage of BLM protests and how that coverage shapes viewers view of the political and social movement. Are news outlets striving to keep the public well informed on Black culture and social issues, or are they trying to sway viewpoints in a certain direction? Has BLM been portrayed as having a negative or positive influence in raising awareness of the need for change? To answer these questions, the researcher employed content analysis of coverage from local and national news outlets and interviewed local news professionals working in stations or taking part in coverage during the period studied.
