Abstract

Rural arts Art museums Development Community arts projects Art centers Arts--Management
Many would think that an arts center would be best located inside or within close proximity to an urban area to maximize the benefit of higher population density. On the contrary, arts centers, located in a rural area, may be just as effective and beneficial. This case study focuses on the impact of an arts center in a rural area. In particular, it examines the impact of Appel Farm Art and Music Center located in Elmer, New Jersey. Various dimensions of analysis and factors should be considered to measure the impact of a rural arts center on the nearby communities. The nature of the impact can be social, cultural and economic. Not surprisingly, there are potential negative impacts to the community as well. Largely, although the ultimate implication and result may depend on the nature of the region itself, the benefits outweigh the costs of having an arts center located in a rural area based on the evidence and findings found in this thesis.
