This thesis investigates how multimodal design influences meaning-making in hypertext fiction through the creation of Anthophrenor Alpha, an original hypertext game that incorporates 3D web graphics with Three.js. Using a design research methodology, the textual, 2D visual, 3D visual, and aural modes are examined first through exploratory research and then through a reflection on the design choices made for the hypertext game. It reveals that multimodal design is not an embellishment but a complex component of meaning-making in hypertext fiction. Both technical and creative considerations are identified as important to how meaning is made. Future iterations of Anthophrenor Alpha will refine multimodal design, interactivity, usability, and accessibility to enhance the overall experience.
