Abstract

Social sciences--Research Appreciative inquiry Health in art Interdisciplinary research Health--Social aspects Stakeholder relationships Community Health Performing Arts Public Health
Every year, the gap between high and low-income communities grows more prominent, allowing the structures of oppression to continue and aid in the health inequalities and disparities in the United States. Public health has spent decades targeting specific diseases of high prevalence to the death of citizens. Public health professionals target specific diseases that are prevalent in the country but have not looked deeper into the systems leading to the health disparities seen in communities (Syme, 2003). They have worked and attempted to improve the quality of life of communities and populations through various interventions. The area that the field has failed to utilize is trans-disciplinary collaborations to create interventions that target the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) that contribute directly to the health of people. This research will showcase a six-step iterative arts community engagement framework, including walking tours, community viewing, surveys, focus groups, and workshops. First, Walking tours in the focus neighborhood and shadowing in community spots to form an understanding of the environment and relationship dynamics. Next, surveys and focus groups with community members to assess their attitudes and experiences within their community. Finally, workshops are conducted to empower community members to explore relationships, identify, and overcome objections. This thesis will inform the design of an appreciative, interdisciplinary framework to aid in exploring and identifying the social determinants of health pain points. It will also showcase a framework that empowers the community to express and solutionize their social determinant needs and uplift the community to strengthen intra-community relationships and relationships with the research team.
