Abstract
This culminating project paper details the development and implementation of a songwriting experiential as applied to two online bereavement support groups. While there is an abundance of literature on the efficacy of music therapy for bereavement, there is a gap in the literature when it comes to detailing specific methods, especially in the relatively recent realm of telehealth. This gap is addressed by a detailed description of the development of a specific intervention, grounded in research-supported rationale but informed more directly by clinical implementation - by trial and error. Theories of bereavement are discussed, followed by an overview of literature about music therapy applied to the mourning process. A variety of music therapy methods that have been applied to bereavement are described in brief, followed by a more in-depth discussion of songwriting for assistance with bereavement. Songwriting methodology is focused on as an ideal form of music therapy for bereavement because of its ability to express and contain a spectrum of emotions, serving goals of catharsis, connection, self-esteem, and stabilization simultaneously. The development of a specific songwriting intervention, based on a variety of influences including a conference presentation and an experiential used by an internship supervisor, is then described. Most pertinent to recommendations for clinical research and practice is the process of developing the songwriting experiential based on trial and error, during a pandemic that necessitated the telehealth delivery of bereavement support.
