This thesis explores the theory of play and its importance in early childhood development and education. It focused more specifically on the effects of play in the social-emotional and behavioral development of children and their critical thinking skills. The study focused on children in the age range of elementary school children, 5 to 10 years old. The thesis compared traditional forms of play to new forms of digital play and examine the what role digital play can play in the improvement of the early development of children. The methodology involved a systematic review of studies completed previously by peer-viewed experts to design and develop a hypothetical proposal framework model for a website and/or application using various educational digital media and games to be a basis for the use of digital play and gamified learning models in the everyday curriculum in the classroom. This framework aims to be a basis structure that can be further modified and improved on to more easily and successfully use technology to aid in the development and learning of children in the rapidly digitizing world of the 21st Century.
