Digital piracy is a widespread and major issue that is estimated to cost media companies such as television networks, movie studios, and recording companies billions of dollars. Throughout the years the United States government has taken various steps to combat piracy. As technology continues to shift and piracy becomes easier and widespread it becomes increasingly difficult to thwart pirates and find solutions that both effectively stopped copyright infringers and protected the liberty of Americans using the internet. The newest attempt to thwart online piracy, House of Representatives Bill 3261, known as the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), was noble in intention but dangerous in proposed execution, and if it had passed the online liberty and freedoms of all Internet users would have been in serious jeopardy.
