Musicopia Development Arts--Management Education Music Education Nonprofit Organizations
This case study explores the collaborative relationship between Musicopia, a non-profit music education organization, and the Chester Upland School District. This study looks at how one non-profit organization partnered with an under-performing school district to help revitalize music education. The goal of this partnership was to create systematic and sustainable changes in public school arts programming through a comprehensive planning process that was embedded into the fabric of the participating schools and resulted in immediate and realistic action items for school districts to implement. This goal was only partially realized. While the planning process was comprehensive and a realistic strategic plan for music education was developed, facing catastrophic budget problems, the Chester Upland School District decimated the district's music program in one fell swoop before the start of the 2011-12 school year. This case follows Musicopia and the Chester Upland School District from the pre-planning years (2007-2008) through the first year of plan implementation (2009-2010).
