Abstract
"We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color."-Maya Angelou. Within a museum structure, how can engagement towards the African American community be more effective? This paper will outline the structure of the Philadelphia Museum of Art in comparison to the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and the Brooklyn Museum. This paper is based on the theory that the Philadelphia Museum of Art could be more effective in their engagement towards the African American community, including the development of their curatorial schedule, educational outreach, the building of community partnerships and marketing tactics. Through individual interviews and research surrounding the topics of internal resistance and civic engagement, it was found that there is a lot more to do. With the evaluation of such research studies, such as the Research Into Action project that was published by the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance, African Americans are engaged and ready to participate in the Philadelphia arts and culture sector. Institutions have been presented with this data and encouraged to develop new programming and outreach tactics, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art is one of those institutions. This paper will provide suggestions in how to properly and effectively engage the African American community.
