Abstract

Social media addiction Dance therapy
The purpose of this culminating project was to write a theoretical journal article manuscript with the intention of submission for publication to Cyberpsychology: The Journal of Psychosocial Research on Cyberspace. The presented article discusses the mental health concerns associated with addictive social media use and position dance/movement therapy (DMT) as a possible treatment modality. Social media addiction (SMA) has emerged as a significant issue around the globe. While many mental health concerns have been noted in the research, the scope was beyond the capacity of this project. Therefore, the author focuses on depression and the component of addiction which was found to be the most salient in the literature. Additional attention is given to the somatic symptoms of depression, and the bi-directional impact of the stooping body posture observed in persons engaging in social media use. DMT literature is presented that identifies successful research for depression and addiction through the healing processes of DMT such as kinesthetic empathy, group synergy, and mirroring. Presently, there is a lack of research connecting the use of DMT for SMA. The author's intention is to bring awareness to the possible implications of DMT for SMA, to inspire research in this space as the first of its kind, and to further legitimize and support DMT theory and practice as a mainstream modality for mental health.
