Within the evolving landscape of multimedia and immersive technologies, projection mapping stands as a captivating and transformative intersection between digital and physical worlds. Projection mapping is a technique that is used to develop digital content for projection onto physical surfaces. Existing projection mapping techniques are commonly used for stationary projection with digital content aligned for a predetermined perspective. These systems, however, cannot adjust for dynamic positional and environmental changes between virtual objects and the viewer in physical space. This research explores the integration of projection mapping and virtual production techniques to achieve digital content visualization that blends virtual environments with physical spaces. A novel methodology is developed for the application of real-time engines for dynamic projection mapping, referred to as virtual projection. In this methodology, projection mapping is conducted entirely through Unreal Engine and allows the projector, the viewer, and the projection surface to move while still maintaining accurate perspective-based projection of a virtual environment. Because projection mapping is conducted through Unreal Engine, additional mechanics and extensions accessible to game engines are also speculated. Ultimately, this approach looks to bridge the gap between virtual objects and real-world space using projection for direct visualization and mediated interaction, resulting in a dynamic mixed reality framework.
