Abstract
Association of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) with Burkitt lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma was known by the 1970s, thus, the investigation of Miller et al at Yale seeking a possible etiologic association with acute lymphoblastic leukemia—for which they found no evidence. During training, this writer was struck with the possible sinister personality of EBV when its growth in cell culture at that time was confirmed by transformation of umbilical cord B lymphocytes into lymphoblasts, leading to their immortalization in cell culture. No other virus behaves thusly. Confirmation of EBV as the etiology of infectious mononucleosis at about the same time was due to a serendipitous finding in a laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania studying EBV and Burkitt lymphoma when a lead technologist whose serum had been used as a negative antibody control became positive following an acute illness typical of infectious mononucleosis.
