A Volumetric Method for Assessing Giardia Inactivation

Abstract
The level of Giardia inactivation is commonly assessed via time-consuming disinfection tests in which dead and living organisms are laboriously counted. Since the Surface Water Treatment Rule requires accurate determination of the inactivation value, researchers have been eager to find some method for estimating the numbers of viable trophozoites alone. A volumetric method that meets these criteria is presented. The effectiveness of the methodology is evaluated via a comparison with results obtained using conventional techniques. Results obtained through each method were found to be equivalent. Further research will be needed to assess the viability of the technique for all ranges of waters, disinfectants, and organisms.
