Abstract

Behavior Therapy Cognitive Therapy Human Mental Disorders
Cognitive and Behavioral Interventions: An Empirical Approach to Mental Health Problems (see record 1993-99129-000), a text geared primarily for undergraduate students, is divided into four sections: introductory chapters on theory and history, applications with adults, applications with children and families, and a brief section on future directions. In summary, although some unevenness across chapters exists, this book very nicely does the job for which it is intended- to educate and inform undergraduate students about one major theoretical approach to the treatment of psychological disorders. On the other hand, it is less helpful as a guide for personal self-improvement, as the editors offer in their Preface. Overall, this is definitely the text we would use the next time either of us teaches an undergraduate course in behavior therapy. As a first encounter with cognitive-behavioral interventions by college students, this text will certainly facilitate interest for those students pursuing graduate education. As such, reading this text would be a "reinforcing," and not a "punishing," experience. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved)
