Abstract

Families have always been and continue to be the primary providers of long-term care to older adults in the United States. As caregiving is regarded as a normative role and the singular responsibility of families, it has commanded significant national attention in only the past 10 years (Gitlin & Hodgson, in press). The growing public health concern for family caregivers represents a historical and cultural shift—from viewing caregiving as a personal, private obligation to recognizing that societal action is necessary.
