A linguistic conception of rationality

Social Science Information, Vol.30(Jun 91), pp.233-255

Abstract

Two conceptions of rationality are predominant in the social sciences: A proposed new view begins with a commonsense and linguistic interpretation of rationality: that a decision is rational if it is based on a valid rationale and it sees both normative and descriptive standards of rationality as historically contingent, with the implication that a theory of rational action in society would have to be framed at quite a high level of abstraction.
