A multiple-baseline approach to behavioral intervention in anorexia nervosa
Behavior therapy, v 9(3), pp 368-376

Abstract
Seven subjects with a diagnosis of anorexia nervosa were treated with behavioral contracts in a hospital setting. Behavioral contracts were initiated at different points during hospitalization for each of the subjects. Treatment was defined as 13 days on a behavioral contract. Outcome was evaluated using the
R
n
statistic for this multiple-baseline approach. The behavioral intervention was found to have a significant effect on weight gain. Improvements made with treatment tended to be maintained in follow-up. A multiple-baseline approach using the
R
n
statistic permitted a controlled study using a small sample without a control group. This research methodology may be applicable to a wide variety of clinical areas.
