Abstract
It has been reported that differences between low- and middle-SES children's language may be due to differences in the linguistic socialization patterns between the parents and their children. It has recently been suggested that these different interaction patterns may be due to differences in the SES groups' expectancies as to when certain developmental milestones should emerge. In the present study a comparison of 20 low and 20 middle-SES mothers was undertaken to determine (a) howfarthe groups deviatedfrom the norm in predicting the emergence of 14 language developmental milestones, and (b) how far groups deviated from each other on the same milestones?
Analyses revealed that both groups of mothers deviated significantly from the norm on the majority of items on the survey. Further analyses revealed that there were differences between the groups on 6 out of the 14 items, with the middle-SES mothers receiving scores closer to the norm. Findings are discussed in terms of SES differences in the relationship between acquired knowledge of development and social interaction between parent and child.
