APPLIED SOCIOLOGY AND THE LABOR MOVEMENT: ON BARGAINING MUTUAL GAINS
Journal of applied sociology - Society for Applied Sociology (U.S.), Vol.9
01 Jan 1992
Abstract
Although sociology and unionism have long been of interest to one another, our discipline goes underutilized at present by organized labor. Specific advice is offered for applied sociologists drawn to assist America's largest social movement and the world's largest labor movement (16 million members). Several distinct applications of our discipline are discussed (survey research, long-range forecasting, etc.) and many relevant publications are cited. Particular attention is paid to certain qualifiers (such as pro-labor partisanship, willingness not to publish, etc.) that may preclude pursuit by some sociologists of union consulting work. Even more emphasis, however, is placed on the unique satisfaction inherent in such matters.
