Abstract
Acetaminophen is an excellent analgesic and antipyretic agent that is virtually devoid of anti-inflammatory effect and gastrointestinal toxicity. In 1966, however, a case of hepatotoxicity caused by an overdose of acetaminophen was reported in England. Since then, many such cases have been reported in the literature. The toxicity of acetaminophen overdose has been thoroughly investigated, and the mechanism is now understood. Extensive studies at the Rocky Mountain Poison Center have established acetylcysteine as an effective antidote in acetaminophen overdose.
