Abstract
Ultrasound absorption over the frequency range 5 × 10
4–10
8 Hz and the correlation radius of the concentration fluctuations in solutions of polyethylene glycol of MM 400–20,000 are measured in low molecular weight solvents at the critical concentration. At low frequencies the observed ultrasound absorption is determined by relaxation of the concentration fluctuations, whereas, in the high frequency region it is disguised by the viscous friction of the polymer chains. The absorption fluctuation of the ultrasound at various frequencies, temperatures, and MM can be represented in the form of a single curve for the absorption fluctuation as a function of the reduced frequency. At low reduced frequencies quantitative agreement with the theory of interacting modes is observed, whereas at high frequencies qualitative agreement with dynamic scaling theory is observed.
