Addressing chronic pain vulnerability with interprofessional care and retrospective reflections from art and physical therapists on interprofessional education: A dual case study
Journal of interprofessional education & practice, v 20, 100331
Sep 2020
Abstract
This dual-case study explores the impact of interprofessional care for Janelle, a patient with developing chronic pain, and describes how interprofessional collaboration influenced the novice clinicians who provided her care. Two physical therapy residents, Jason and Mike, and an art therapy intern, Dylan, worked collaboratively with the guidance of their mentors. The novice clinicians used a clinical reasoning model to guide practice during Janelle's care, allowing them to address Janelle's risk factors and avoid development of chronic pain. They then used a retrospective reflection tool 5 years later to consider the impact of their collaboration on treatment and their professional development. Jason, Mike, and Dylan developed skills for treating complex issues such as chronic pain and gained new appreciation for interprofessional collaboration, feedback, and how working as a team produces holistic care.
