Abstract

interrogations justice-involved youth Miranda comprehension Miranda rights Miranda rights waiver
Although adolescents' understanding and appreciation of Miranda rights have been examined with community youth and youth in the legal system, Miranda waiver capacities have not been compared between these populations, a comparison critical to elucidating relationships between rights comprehension, age, and IQ. This study compared Miranda comprehension between 108 juveniles in residential pre- and post-adjudication facilities and 43 students in a high-achieving private school. The juvenile justice sample had significantly lower Miranda comprehension, attributable to differences in verbal IQ. The relationship between age and verbal IQ and Miranda comprehension differed for the two samples, suggesting relationships between these variables may be more complex than previously thought.
