All the Right Corporate Moves
The Conference Board review, Vol.23(1)

Abstract
Organizational design -- the way a company is put together -- has a tremendous impact on corporate performance. However, too many businesses are unaware of their design options and the strengths and weaknesses of each. Concrete models are needed to understand organizational design. Team sports are concrete, familiar, accessible to everyone, and deeply meaningful to many and thus serve as good models. ''Basketball organizations'' rely on peer relations. It is the frequent, intense sharing of information among players that makes this kind of organization function. Basketball organizations operate with minimal supervision, and the management guidance they do receive is enabling, rather than controlling. These organizations are particularly well-suited to change because they can adapt to unforeseen conditions. The tactics in basketball have to do with game management. The core issue is how each team player influences the flow of the game. For managers, the strategy involves developing a team's ability to coordinate itself.
