Abstract
A multi-criteria approach to the facility layout problem is presented. The proposed constructive model, based on Saaty's Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), rates the set of pairs of potentially adjacent departments with respect to both qualitative and quantitative criteria. A computer program, incorporating a modified AHP portion and a layout construction module, is developed to construct departmental locations within a facility. The effectiveness of the approach and the computer program is illustrated with an example. The model does not aggregate all qualitative factors into a single closeness rating, but considers each of the criteria separately. The approach incorporates the anticipated inconsistencies of human judgment. The consistency checks in the program guard against highly erratic judgments.
