An Examination of Severity Classification Measures and Subject Criteria Used for Studies on Mild Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury

Abstract
Studies on mild pediatric traumatic brain injury were reviewed focusing on their use of subject selection criteria to assess the presence of mild traumatic brain injury. Criteria advocated by the American Congress of Rehabilitative Medicine for the assessment of mild traumatic brain injury were discussed including the Glasgow Coma Scale, loss of consciousness, post-traumatic amnesia, focal neurologic deficits, & skull fracture. Factors that made cross-study comparisons difficult included age ranges of subjects, time elapsed since injury, sample size & composition, & pre- & post-morbid subject capabilities. Wide variations between studies in the way criteria were defined & applied were seen. Suggestions are provided for future studies regarding sample composition & the use of assessment criteria that may simplify between study comparisons. 2 Tables, 1 Figure, 51 References.
