An Exploration of Arts Advocates' Use of Experimentally Designed Arts Program Research
The Journal of arts management, law, and society, v 48(4), pp 243-258
08 Aug 2018
Abstract
In the current political climate, there is an understandable pressure on arts advocates to demonstrate irrefutable proof of the arts' impact. How, then, can arts advocates use evidence-based research to advance their agendas when some have raised concern regarding rigor in arts research? This article shares findings from two recent studies of arts programs in Philadelphia, PA, which used a rigorous experimental design framework. The opportunities and challenges these types of studies present for arts advocates, including quality control, translation, the costs of rigor, intra-arts competition, and theories of change, are discussed.
