Abstract

Behavior Therapy Hospitalized Patients Human
Reviews the book, Inpatient Behavior Therapy for Children and Adolescents edited by Vincent B. Van Hasselt and David J. Kolko (see record 1993-98611-000). The aim of this volume appears to rest in providing such a context toward treatment as well as specific guidelines for developing interventions regarding work with various clinical populations and special problems within the inpatient milieu. In his opening chapter that provides the historical overview, Kolko argues quite effectively for the need for such a text. His discussion of common systemic difficulties such as staff inconsistency, concurrent treatments, temporal pressures, and multiple agency agendas provide a realistic and practical framework with which to approach the remaining chapters. On the whole, this is a very good volume that is much needed, easily understood and worth reading. It would be particularly useful to graduate-level clinical trainees and interns and should be read by child psychiatric residents to update their approach and encourage empirically minded treatment.
