Abstract

The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Graduate Medical Education Committee was established in October 1993 at the ACEP Scientific Assembly in Chicago. The committee was organized to address issues related to graduate medical education and residency training in emergency medicine. Its specific objectives were to obtain data on the residency applicant pool, to evaluate current efforts and future demands for attracting medical students into emergency medicine, and to determine the number of residency positions required to meet future manpower needs of the specialty. Of key importance in meeting all objectives was the need to evaluate the progress made in increasing the applicant pool for women and minorities to be representative of the American population. The purpose of this paper is to describe the committee's findings with regard to the applicant pool, to underscore current shortcomings, and to make recommendations for the future. Data sources include the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the National Resident Matching Program (Matching Program), and the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM).
