Areas for improvement in the current care and treatment of dry eye disease

Abstract
Introduction: Dry eye disease (DED) is a prevalent and multifactorial condition that significantly impacts patients' quality of life and daily functioning. Despite recent advancements in diagnosis and treatment, gaps persist in delivering optimal, patient-centered care for DED. Areas covered: This review discusses key areas needing improvement in DED care, including the need for standardized diagnostic protocols, personalized treatment approaches, comprehensive patient education, and long-term management strategies. Recommendations for each area are provided to enhance the effectiveness of current DED care models. Expert opinion: Future DED care should focus on a more integrated, personalized approach that utilizes early patient identification, emerging diagnostic technologies, customized treatment strategies, and robust patient education programs. Strengthening long-term management and follow-up protocols is essential to improve outcomes and address the chronic nature of DED.
