Abstract
Yang and Lester (2004) assessed the positive and negative attitudes that people have toward online shopping and stated that such attitudes are associated with whether people actually make purchases of various products online. As the Internet becomes a major venue for an kinds of activities for making purchases, obtaining information, banking, and other tasks (New-burger, 2001), more people are taking up the use of the Internet. Yang and Lester's study (2004) was conducted in 2001, so the present study was designed to see whether the measured attitudes toward online shopping have changed in the four years since then.
Undergraduate students at the same college surveyed in 2001 were given the 21-item measure of attitudes toward online shopping and asked which of 15 products they had purchased over the Internet in the previous year. In 2001, 148 female and 32 male students were surveyed (M-age=22.7 yr., SD 55). In 2005, 72 female and 26 male students were surveyed (M-age=21.8 yr., SD 3.3).
The total score on the 11 positive items about online shopping increased from 36.3 to 41.6 (SDs = 10.9 and 10.2; t=3.92,two-taded p <.001), and this increase was significant for nine of the 11 items. The total score on the 10 negative items decreased but not significantly from 32.4 to 30.7 (SDs -9.0 and 9.3; t=1.53), and this decrease was significant for only three of the 10 items.
The total number of products purchased out of the 15 listed increased from 2.1 to 3.6 (t=5.45, p <.001). For individual products, students in 2005 were significantly more likely to purchase books, car insurance, computers, airline tickets, hotel rooms, clothes, shoes, and shows/concert seats. There was no increase in the purchase of compact discs, cars, stationery, stocks/shares, groceries, pornography, or gambling.
