Abstract
This paper presents the development of the hydrodynamics module of a computer model BEST3D 1.0 (A Bay/Estuary Model to Simulate Hydrodynamics and Thermal, Salinity, and Water Quality Transport in 3-Dimensions Version 1.0). In BEST3D 1.0, the hydrodynamic module solves three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with or without the hydrostatic assumptions. The turbulence is modeled with typical κ-ψ transport equations. The Boussinesq approximation is employed to deal with the buoyancy force due to temperature and salinity variations. The moving free surface is explicitly handled by solving the kinematic boundary condition equation using a node-repositioning algorithm. The transport module solves the energy equation for spatial-temporal distributions of temperature and the mass transport equations for the salinity field. The Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) representation is adopted for all transport equations including momentum transport. The solution is obtained with finite element methods or a combination of finite element and Semi-Lagrangian (particle tracking) methods. BEST3D 1.0 is employed as a modeling tool to simulate hydrodynamics and salinity transport in Loxahatchee Estuary. The computational domain includes the Loxahatchee estuary, Intracoastal Waterways, and three major tributaries of the river – the South Fork, North Fork, and Northwest Fork. The comparison between the model output tides and salinity levels and the field data at Coastal Guard Dock, Pompano Drive, and Boy Scout Dock was made. These comparisons indicated that the model has been successfully calibrated with tides and salinities. The model will be applied to Loxahatchee Estuary for the investigation of its minimum flow requirements to maintain ecological balance.
