Abstract
Water supply systems must be carefully managed to provide high quality water to consumers. The need to protect water distribution systems from potential contamination problems is stressed. Effective disinfection of new mains is a primary step toward safeguarding the integrity of the water supply. Results are presented from a project conducted to evaluate the levels of microbial loadings found in new mains. Microbial loadings were determined based on measurements of heterotrophic plate count. Findings from this project can be integrated with information detailing the sensitivity of indigenous organisms to disinfectants to yield a set of effective guidelines for the disinfection of new mains.
