Abstract
To the Editor:
The recent article, "Role of Behavior Modification in Preventive Medicine," by Pomerleau et al. (N Engl J Med 292:24, 1975), although praiseworthy in its view that health practices in Western industrial nations must change if a significant decline in the prevalence of the major mortal illnesses is to occur, conceals serious ethical issues. All too often our zeal for developing and applying new technologies to medical treatment and prevention of disease obscures a broader vision of the implications of what we are doing.
