Abstract
Water distribution systems in the USA routinely carry chlorine residuals in excess of 0.5 mg/L, and invariably carry residuals above 0.1 mg/L. This paper outlines some of the benefits which chlorine is believed to confer in this application. The age and vulnerability of the systems sets the framework for consideration. Benefits accruing to the maintenance of a chlorine residual include protection against modest degrees of intrusion of contaminants, serving as a watch for the presence of such intrusion, and acting to reduce the potential for growth of heterotrophic organisms.
