Abstract
Big data and its influence in health and medicine globally is becoming increasingly a concern of social scientists of health and medicine. The production and utilization of massive datasets are influencing everything in health-from medical science to healthcare delivery. This entry, by looking at data collection and use in healthcare, and the commercial interests in health data generally, highlights some of the ongoing issues surrounding big data that are of particular concern to social scientists who study health and medicine. Specifically, it considers issues of patient privacy, bias in medicine and healthcare delivery, and the commercialization of health data, all issues that are of particular concern to social scientists who study health and medicine.
