Abstract
In anticipation of the transit of Venus in 1769, an important event that would allow astronomers to calculate the distance between the Earth and the Sun, David Rittenhouse created astronomical instruments and built an observatory in Norriton. Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Mercury; the lunarium indicates the phase of the Moon; a filigreed hand shows the month; and an aperture gives the date. The upper left dial shows the placement of the Sun and the Moon in the Zodiac; the upper right dial indicates the equation of time -the difference between solar time and mean time; the lower left dial shows the Moon's orbit around the Earth; and the lower right dial is a tune indicator for the ten songs the clock can play.
