Abstract
This article reports that the silicon era is coming to an end and introduces a weird emerging world where algae, mushrooms and microbes do our computing for us. Scientists working in the field of synthetic biology are exploring the potential such lifeforms as bacteria hold as power-efficient computing engines, with the prospect of realising the holy grail of computing - parallel processing. Other developments include quantum computing: a Canadian company has made such a computer commercially available though how it works can no more be explained than can quantum mechanics itself.
