Abstract

Medical biochemistry Learning objectives Cognitive integration Clinical correlation Medical education Curriculum development
Students struggle to apply foundational biochemistry to clinical practice without explicit connections. The Association of Biochemistry Educators (ABE) formed a community of practice to develop clinically-oriented learning objectives using backward design from the Aquifer Sciences Curricular Database. Of 785 Aquifer objectives reviewed, 155 required biochemistry knowledge. The team revised 386 pre-existing ABE objectives into 228 new objectives, each tagged with Common Conditions, Core Concepts, Major Topics, and Sub-Topics, linked to relevant Aquifer objectives. By explicitly connecting biochemical mechanisms to clinical practice and patient safety considerations, this resource transforms foundational sciences from isolated knowledge into the conceptual foundation for clinical reasoning.
