Abstract
The article reviews critical statements about the conditions of the US university as published in popular ("muckracking") journals, higher education journals and professional education books. The following issues emerged as being critizised in the publications included into the study: 1) education of / for the masses, elitism; 2) research vs. teaching, teaching in higher education; 3) academic freedom; 4) business and government influence; 5) athletics in university.
