Abstract
The coelomic hemerythrin from the sipunculid P. lurco has the trimeric quaternary structure observed previously for this genus. The readily crystallizable protein contains only 2 electrophoretically distinguishable components, 1 of which is predominant. Optical absorption and circular dichroism spectra show the diiron [2 Fe] environment to be only slightly different from that of other hemerythrins, although the protein need not contain a (noncoordinating) anion binding site and the tryptophan and cysteine content is less than that of the octameric hemerythrins. Fe coordination adducts form with dicyanamide and selenocyanate, the visible absorption spectrum of the latter being similar to that of oxyhemerythrin.
