Abstract
Despite the development of potent antimicrobial agents, pneumonia remains the "captain of the men of death". Recent surveys indicate that approximately 2.5 million cases occur each year and result in about 50,000 deaths annually. Patients with pneumonia are usually acutely ill, and antibiotic therapy is almost always started before culture results become available. The choice of antibiotic is dependent on the physician's ability to make an empiric diagnosis of the likely microbial etiology. This article will discuss clues to the diagnosis of pneumonia, as well as guidelines for the treatment of the most common types.
